Work /Life Balance while dealing with Elder Care. Georgia Durga, Commission on Aging: Demographics suggest the numbers of employed caregivers will grow sharply in coming years. Employers should be concerned about helping elder care providers because of the increasing impact caregiving has on work. Will employers be expected to offer elder care aid as a general benefit or a "cafeteria" option? These and related topics will be explored.

04/08/08

Workplace Diversity as a Change Management Process . After conducting an informal survey among our members, we discovered only a very small percentage include gender identity or sexual orientation in their non-discrimination and diversity policies or their benefit structures. Despite the cited business advantages of workplace diversity, many companies struggle with this issue. Our goal is to show HR professionals how to utilize the benefits of workplace diversity in support of their company's mission. Dr. David McClary of Munson Occupational Health & Medicine will address diversity issues focusing on fostering a culture of inclusion that will benefit in recruiting and retaining quality employees and show how workplace diversity overall can be reflected in your company's programs and policies.

05/13/08

Legislative Update. Legislative Director of MISHRM, Kathie Elliott: Just what are our elected officials up to? How does legislation affect our companies, our employees, our policies and our sanity? This meeting will focus on both the state and federal legislative proceedings and will be in understandable, lay-man's terms.

Avoiding Discriminatory Practices Regarding National Origin and Imigration:
The use of tests and other selection procedures can be a very effective means of determining which applicants or employees are most qualified for a particular job. However, use of these tools can violate the federal anti-discrimination laws if an employer intentionally uses them to discriminate based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, or age (40 or older). Use of tests and other selection procedures can also violate the federal anti-discrimination laws if they disproportionately exclude people in a particular group by race, sex, or another covered basis, unless the employer can justify the test or procedure under the law.

Marcia Hyatt,  Sr. Investigator with the EEOC, will provide technical assistance on some common issues relating to the federal anti-discrimination laws and the use of tests and other selection procedures in the employment process, security issues companies may face, and effective best practices.

“The Speed of Trust” Nationally known speaker Stephen M.R. Covey will present his business book, which challenges the assumption that trust is “soft” and demonstrates that trust is a hard-edged, economic driver—a learnable and measurable skill that makes organizations more profitable, people more promotable, and relationships more energizing. He reveals the 13 behaviors common to high trust leaders and presents a road map to establish trust on every level, build character and competence, enhance credibility, and create leadership that inspires confidence. The Northwest Michigan Council of Government, working with TAHRA to host this event, will provide marketing and registration support.
